Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 1)

अनृतं साहसं माया मूर्खत्वमतिलोभिता ।
अशौचत्वं निर्दयत्वं स्त्रीणां दोषाः स्वभावजाः

Meaning in English

Untruthfulness, rashness, guile, stupidity, avarice, uncleanliness and
cruelty are a women’s seven natural flaws.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 2)

भोज्यं भोजनशक्तिश्च रतिशक्तिर्वराङ्गना ।
विभवो दानशक्तिश्च नाल्पस्य तपसः फलम् ॥

Meaning in English

To have ability for eating when dishes are ready at hand, to be robust
and virile in the company of one’s religiously wedded wife, and to have
a mind for making charity when one is prosperous are the fruits of no
ordinary austerities.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 3)

यस्य पुत्रो वशीभूतो भार्या छन्दानुगामिनी ।
विभवे यश्च सन्तुष्टस्तस्य स्वर्ग इहैव हि ॥

Meaning in English

He whose son is obedient to him, whose wife’s conduct is in accordance
with his wishes, and who is content with his riches, has his heaven here
on earth.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 4)

ते पुत्रा ये पितुर्भक्ताः स पिता यस्तु पोषकः ।
तन्मित्रं यत्र विश्वासः सा भार्या यत्र निर्वृतिः

Meaning in English

They alone are sons who are devoted to their father. He is a father who
supports his sons. He is a friend in whom we can confide, and she only
is a wife in whose company the husband feels contented and peaceful

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 5)

परोक्षे कार्यहन्तारं प्रत्यक्षे प्रियवादिनम् ।
वर्जयेत्तादृशं मित्रं विषकुम्भं पयोमुखम् ॥

Meaning in English

Avoid him who talks sweetly before you but tries to ruin you behind
your back, for he is like a pitcher of poison with milk on top.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 6)

न विश्वसेत्कुमित्रे च मित्रे चापि न विश्वसेत् ।
कदाचित्कुपितं मित्रं सर्वं गुह्यं प्रकाशयेत् ॥

Meaning in English

Do not put your trust in a bad companion nor even trust an ordinary
friend, for if he should get angry with you, he may bring all your secrets
to light.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 7)

मनसा चिन्तितं कार्यं वाचा नैव प्रकाशयेत् ।
मन्त्रेण रक्षयेद्गूढं कार्ये चापि नियोजयेत् ॥

Meaning in English

Do not reveal what you have thought upon doing, but by wise council
keep it secret being determined to carry it into execution.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 8)

कष्टं च खलु मूर्खत्वं कष्टं च खलु यौवनम् ।
कष्टात्कष्टतरं चैव परगेहनिवासनम् ॥

Meaning in English

Foolishness is indeed painful, and verily so is youth, but more painful
by far than either is being obliged in another person’s house.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 9)

शैले शैले च माणिक्यं मौक्तिकं न गजे गजे ।
साधवो न हि सर्वत्र चन्दनं न वने वने ॥

Meaning in English

There does not exist a ruby in every mountain, nor a pearl in the head of
every elephant; neither are the sadhus to be found everywhere, nor
sandal trees in every forest.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 10)

पुत्राश्च विविधैः शीलैर्नियोज्याः सततं बुधैः ।
नीतिज्ञाः शीलसम्पन्ना भवन्ति कुलपूजिताः ॥

Meaning in English

Wise men should always bring up their sons in various moral ways, for
children who have knowledge of niti-shastra and are well-behaved
become a glory to their family.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 11)

माता शत्रुः पिता वैरी याभ्यां बाला न पाठिताः ।
सभामध्ये न शोभन्ते हंसमध्ये बको यथा ॥

Meaning in English

Those parents who do not educate their sons are their enemies; for as is
a crane among swans, so are ignorant so are ignorant sons in a public

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 12)

लालनाद्बहवो दोषास्ताडने बहवो गुणाः ।
तस्मात्पुत्रं च शिष्यं च ताडयेन्न तु लालयेत् ॥

Meaning in English

Many a bad habit is developed through overindulgence, and many a
good one by chastisement, therefore beat your son as well as your pupil;
never indulge them. (“Spare the rod and spoil the child.”)

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 13)

श्लोकेन वा तदर्धेन तदर्धार्धाक्षरेण वा ।
अबन्ध्यं दिवसं कुर्याद्दानाध्ययनकर्मभिः ॥

Meaning in English

Let not a single day pass without your learning a verse, half a verse, or
a fourth of it, or even one letter of it; nor without attending to charity,
study and other pious activity.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 14)

कान्तावियोगः स्वजनापमानं
ऋणस्य शेषं कुनृपस्य सेवा ।
दारिद्र्यभावाद्विमुखं च मित्रं
विनाग्निना पञ्च दहन्ति कायम् ॥

Meaning in English

Separation from the wife, disgrace from one’s own people, an enemy
saved in battle, service to a wicked king, poverty, and a mismanaged
assembly: these six kinds of evils, if afflicting a person, burn him even
without fire

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 15)

नदीतीरे च ये वृक्षाः परगेहेषु कामिनी ।
मन्त्रहीनाश्च राजानः शीघ्रं नश्यन्त्यसंशयम् ॥

Meaning in English

Trees on a river bank, a woman in another man’s house, and kings
without counsellors go without doubt to swift destruction.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 16)

बलं विद्या च विप्राणां राज्ञां सैन्यं बलं तथा ।
बलं वित्तं च वैश्यानां शूद्राणां पारिचर्यकम् ॥

Meaning in English

A brahmana’s strength is in his learning, a king’s strength is in his
army, a vaishya’s strength is in his wealth and a shudra’s strength is in
his attitude of service.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 17)

निर्धनं पुरुषं वेश्या प्रजा भग्नं नृपं त्यजेत् ।
खगा वीतफलं वृक्षं भुक्त्वा चाभ्यागतो गृहम् ॥

Meaning in English

The prostitute has to forsake a man who has no money, the subject a
king that cannot defend him, the birds in a tree that bears no fruit, and
the guests in a house after they have finished their meals.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 18)

गृहीत्वा दक्षिणां विप्रास्त्यजन्ति यजमानकम् ।
प्राप्तविद्या गुरुं शिष्या दग्धारण्यं मृगास्तथा ॥

Meaning in English

Brahmanas quit their patrons after receiving alms from them, scholars
leave their teachers after receiving education from them, and animals
desert a forest that has been burnt down.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 19)

दुराचारी दुरादृष्टिर्दुरावासी च दुर्जनः ।
यन्मैत्री क्रियते पुंभिर्नरः शीघ्रं विनश्यति ॥

Meaning in English

He who befriends a man whose conduct is vicious, whose vision
impure, and who is notoriously crooked, is rapidly ruined.

Chanakya Niti (Chap. 2 – Shlok 20)

समाने शोभते प्रीतिः राज्ञि सेवा च शोभते ।
वाणिज्यं व्यवहारेषु दिव्या स्त्री शोभते गृहे ॥

Meaning in English

Friendship between equals flourishes, service under a king is
respectable, it is good to be business-minded in public dealings, and a
handsome lady is safe in her own home.
